You typically just have to wait and plan your turn, and if you are on the receiving end of a beat down not get to broken up over it. If you are looking for a relaxed game and someone brings their event lists you are going to probably have a bad time.Įdit: One other thing I will note is while 40k and AoS are a hybrid 'you go I go' game (you both get to fight during melee combat and have hero phase abilities, Warmachine is very static in terms of non active turn interaction. Warmachine can be fun if everyones expectations are in the same place. This was a source of a lot of bad feelings at the table when you would miss a charge by 1/4". I imagine warmachine has gotten better in the age of pre-measuring, I put my drafting skills to use back in the day by very accurately judging distances by eye. I walked away from the game due to this kind of attitude and opted to play Age of Sigmar for a more relaxed 'roll all the dice' game. It is a bit harder to setup for a beer and pretzels kinda night, you need to be on your game or you can get trashed pretty easily.

I have encounter the worst 'win at all cost' players in Warmachine over any other game, this is prob due to the inherent competitive nature of the game. Is it fun? The game can be a very fun and collaborative experience if you and your player are on the same wavelength. Just like a collectible card game, a miniature game is a larger hobby than just the game, and new models and released keep people interested and shakes thing up more.Īnd the big problem people are running into, some areas the game just disappears and you can just not find people to play for the life of you. It was so exciting each year to get a new book with a lot of cool new toys that was slowly released over the next year. Which is understandable cause it is impossible to keep adding to armies, and GW has their codex concept for that (which isn't great). Just the same release for warmachine have slowed. The game is good (but there are a lot of good miniatures games out there, boardgames and wargames), in the beginning PP was better value for money, but their prices are high, you need big armies too, and the models didn't improve.Īnd some lines are kind of big question marks now, with MonPoc getting a boardgame release? Is that to boost the miniature line? If that takes off though, will they just go the boardgame route? Drop the game? They have dropped it before. PP itself is kind of missing the ball left and right in an impressive fashion though. PP Puts out some amazing games, way above the batting average of GW (even if GW has some good ones even though they are starting to show their wear, blood bowl will always have a place in my heart) Sorry for the word wall but I'm doing this from mobile and I feel a little rambling because of it. (That all said, gw model quality is undeniably better, and the 40k universe and lore are incredible, not they are bad on the privateer press side of things by any stretch, but gw has been doing this for longer and it shows) So honestly, I hope PP does does something to capitalize against GW's failings as a company and bring more players back I think it's the better game play, and competition between companies breeds better markets for the players. Starting an army is fairly cheap with the starter sets or army boxes if you can find them, but once you're buying individual models and units, costs are comparable.

Power creep exists, but once in a while free erratas are released to tune models up or down. But there was something of an exodus since that happened right as gw got their act together (for at least a little bit). If you read far enough you'll read a lot about the botched release of 3rd edition, but honestly that's mostly rectified now. We don't see very many model releases anymore and that makes people nervous.

That said, PP as a company I don't have confidence that they know what they're doing anymore, and have like 3 miniature games all going at the same time with varying degrees of support. Personally I think warmachine is the better game to play, the rules are cleaner, you don't need need nearly as many supplementary materials, and personally my standard size games take about 2 hours.
